WATERTOWN, SD – It took a thrilling overtime period, but Watertown boys basketball earned their first victory of the season Tuesday, taking down the Mitchell Kernels 59-55.
Down 24-18 at the half, and trailing by 14 points at the 8-minute mark of the third quarter, Watertown poured it on with a 21-point fourth quarter to tie the game at 50 heading into the extra frame. The Arrows outscored Mitchell 9-5 in overtime to take home the victory.
Watertown was led by Carter Buisker with a 23-point performance. Buisker also added seven assists and four steals. Jackson McClemans contributed 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. Kaden Decker added seven points and Isaac Rehorst had six.
On the girls’ side of the doubleheader, a big fourth quarter by Mitchell would send the Kernels past Watertown 49-39. Down 19-12 at the half, Watertown would boast a 15 point third quarter to pull within one, 28-27 at the start of the fourth. Mitchell would use strong second half shooting to pull away with a 21 point fourth quarter for the win.
Watertown was led by Jordan Remmers with 11 points. Lily Mack and Malia Kranz each added eight and Andi Olson tallied seven points. Watertown shot 34 percent from the field in the contest.
Next up for Watertown basketball, the boys will host Tea Area on December 20, while the girls’ next action will be on January 2 at Sturgis.
