Late Empty-Netter Seals Aberdeen Victory Over Watertown

ABERDEEN, S.D. — A two-goal second period propelled Aberdeen past Watertown 4-2 in South Dakota high school boys hockey action Friday night at the Odde Ice Arena.

Aberdeen’s Carter Vilhauer opened the scoring at the 4:20 mark of the first period. Watertown answered less than two minutes later when Colin Solheim scored on an assist from Jack Elshere to tie it 1-1.

Aberdeen took the lead in the second with goals by Derek Holland and Trayke Roehrich to make it 3-1 heading into the third. Solheim pulled the Lakers within one with a goal at 11:44 of the third period, but Vilhauer scored an empty-netter with 18 seconds remaining to secure the Cougar victory.

Aberdeen outshot Watertown 30-17.

Girls hockey back home at Prairie Lakes Ice Arena, the Laker girls fell to the Sioux Falls Flyers 6-1. The Flyers outshot Watertown 52-12. The Lakers’ lone goal came unassisted in the second period from Emma Schleusner at the 10:01 mark.

The Watertown girls travel to Fort Pierre to face Oahe on Saturday, while the boys return home to take on the Brandon Valley Ice Cats.
