WATERTOWN, S.D. – The Watertown Shamrocks swept a weekend series against the Minnesota Mallards in front of home fans at Prairie Lakes Ice Arena.
A dominant first period set the tone for Watertown in a 5-2 win over the Mallards on Friday. Owen Fask (15:20), Zach Boren (13:04), and Jakov Matijevic (0:24) opened the scoring for the Shamrocks. Watertown extended the lead in the second period with Boren’s second goal of the night at 15:37 and a tally from Jack Pietila at 0:46. Goaltender JJ Salako stopped 17 of 19 shots for the Shamrocks.
A 20-shot second period propelled Watertown past the Mallards 6-4 on Saturday. Down 2-0 heading into the second, Fask (18:26), Boren (17:39), and Antons Macijevskis scored to give Watertown a 3-2 lead. Two subsequent Mallard goals put Minnesota back on top 4-3 entering the final frame.
Erick Comstock tied the game 4-4 at 16:34 of the third period. Owen Chartier reclaimed the lead for Watertown at 14:39, and Joe Rice secured the victory with an empty-net goal with 11 seconds remaining.
Watertown continues its homestand this weekend with a series against the Austin Bruins starting Friday.
