WATERTOWN, S.D. – The Watertown Shamrocks swept the Aberdeen Wings in a home-and-home weekend series, winning in overtime Friday before securing a shutout victory Saturday.
The Shamrocks beat the Wings 4-3 in overtime Friday at the Odde Ice Arena in Aberdeen. The teams traded goals through the first two periods, with Aberdeen’s Jibber Kuhl scoring in the first and Watertown’s Kyle Greene answering in the second. The offense surged in the third as Owen Pitters put Aberdeen ahead at 14:30. Watertown’s Justin Bartley tied it 2-2 on a power play at 9:04. Kuhl reclaimed the lead for Aberdeen with his second goal at 2:29, but Greene forced overtime with a goal just 28 seconds before the end of regulation. Joe Rice secured the win for the Shamrocks at 3:21 of the overtime period.
Watertown’s Mason Gudridge and Aberdeen’s Willum Braun each recorded 28 saves. The Shamrocks held a narrow 32-31 edge in shots.
On Saturday at Prairie Lakes Ice Arena in Watertown, Gudridge stopped all 40 shots he faced to lead the Shamrocks to a 3-0 win. Zach Boren opened the scoring at 11:53 of the second period, followed by an Owen Chartier power-play goal at 11:59 of the third. Justin Obrochta added an empty-netter with 4 seconds remaining.
Watertown (22-16-1-1) remains fourth in the Central Division and travels to Minot for a series this Friday and Saturday.
