MITCHELL, S.D. — Watertown’s comeback came up short in a 5-4 loss to Oahe in the third-place game of the 2026 SDHSA State Girls Varsity Hockey Tournament in Mitchell on Sunday.
After a scoreless first period, Oahe exploded for a five-goal second. Goals from the Capitals came from Aubrey Steward (2), Brenna Ullmann, Elliot Bertsch, and Kallee Behm. A Harper Hendricks power-play goal at 11:42 kept Watertown in the fight, trailing 5-1 heading into the final frame.
Emma Schleusner began the comeback for Watertown with a power-play goal at 10:43 of the third. Hendricks added her second goal of the night on the power play at 8:28 to make it 5-3. Gracelyn Webb brought Watertown closer with a goal at 5:45 of the third, but the Lakers’ rally fell just short. Watertown takes home fourth place in the tournament.
The Lakers finish the season with an SDHSA record of 9-15.
