ABERDEEN, S.D. — A dominant second-half surge propelled Freeman to a 61-53 victory over defending champion Castlewood in the SDHSAA Class B boys basketball state championship on Saturday.
The Flyers erased an 11-point deficit to secure the program’s first state title since 1975.
Castlewood controlled the early tempo, leading 19-11 after the first quarter and maintaining a 30-20 advantage at halftime. However, Freeman ignited a 9-0 run in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 18-11 in the frame to tighten the contest.
David Walter hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 6:50 remaining in the fourth quarter. Minutes later, Luke Peters drained a 3-pointer at the 5:29 mark to give the Flyers a lead they would not relinquish. Freeman outscored Castlewood 23-12 in the final period to seal the win.
Walter led the Flyers with a double-double, recording 22 points and 12 rebounds. Peters contributed 14 points, while Tate Sorensen added nine points and eight rebounds.
Kamden Keszler led the Warriors with 24 points. Will Aderhold finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Brody Bass added six points.
Castlewood finishes the season 21-3. The Warriors bid farewell to five seniors: Bass, Tyson Manley, Kaden Nedved, Leonard Wernke and Denver Mack.
