WATERTOWN, S.D. — As the Watertown Arrows track and field program enters a new season, head coach Chad Rhode is balancing a roster that is as large as it is young.
With approximately 165 athletes across the boys’ and girls’ programs, the Arrows have high participation. However, Rhode noted that in Class AA, chasing ESD and state titles often becomes a “numbers game” against larger metropolitan programs.
“It’s hard for our kids to be able to compete when it comes to trying to win ESD titles or state titles just because of the numbers,” Rhode said. He noted that metro schools, Sioux Falls, Harrisburg, and Brandon Valley, frequently field three double the athletes per event.
Despite the depth challenges, the Arrows return several veterans. The girls’ program is led by Malia Kranz, a standout at last year’s state meet. She is joined by the full school-record-breaking 4×100-meter relay team: Makenna Blank, Anna Hirtz, Alayna Smith, and Carighan Klatt.
Field events appear to be a strength for Watertown this spring. The boys’ roster features pole vaulters Charlie Whiting and Asher Young, both multi-year state qualifiers. A recent meet in Brookings also saw Mason Iverson clear 6 feet 4 inches in the high jump.
“I think on our boys’ side we have 86 kids out for track, which is outstanding,” Rhode said. “Probably 40 of those are freshmen and sophomores, so they’re young and have a little learning curve, but they’ll do fine.”
The girls’ side features similar depth in field events with state-level high jumpers Reese Munger and Mayla McGee, along with pole vaulters Elly Dingser, Hensley Houge, and Katie Flemming.
While South Dakota weather remains a variable, Rhode’s message to his squad focuses on the fundamentals of competition.
“The big thing is just to compete and to give it your all every time you’re out there,” Rhode said. “Enjoy the process and enjoy being part of a team and representing your school.”
