WATERTOWN, S.D. — Watertown High School announced the hiring of Eric Denning as the new head boys basketball coach, pending board approval.
Denning joins the Arrows with 27 years of head coaching experience and a career record of 388-216. His win total ranks him ninth among active high school basketball coaches in South Dakota.
“I am excited and honored to join the Watertown community and ecstatic to lead the next chapter of Arrow basketball,” Denning said. “Watertown is a great community that has strong athletic traditions, and I look forward to building upon that tradition and producing a product on the court that shows toughness and pride.”
Throughout his career, Denning has led teams to seven state tournament appearances. He has coached 13 All-State players and 46 All-Conference selections. Additionally, his programs have produced six Spirit of Su award winners—an honor Denning considers the state’s highest for a player because it recognizes character and leadership alongside athletic ability.
Watertown Athletic Director Craig Boyens said Denning’s emphasis on accountability makes him an ideal fit for the program.
“His track record of success speaks for itself, but what stands out even more is his passion for building strong, disciplined teams and developing young adults the right way,” Boyens said. “We’re excited for the future of Arrow basketball under his leadership.”
Denning said he views coaching as a platform for developing young men, prioritizing teams that play with passion and mental and physical toughness.
“I can’t wait to get started,” Denning said.
