Arrows Fly High at Huron Invite; Whiting and Dingsor Claim Vault Titles

HURON, S.D. — The Watertown Arrows track and field team delivered a strong performance Friday at the Huron Invite, highlighted by individual event titles and several podium finishes across both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.

The Watertown boys found significant success in the field events, led by Charlie Whiting, who secured a first-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 14 feet. The Arrows also dominated the high jump standings, with Merrik Engels and Mason Iverson taking second and third place, respectively, after both cleared 6 feet 2 inches. On the track, Dane Stark anchored the distance efforts, earning runner-up honors in both the 1,600-meter run in 4:25.35 and the 3,200-meter run in 9:46.76. The 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team of Tyson Miller, Holton Schutt, Dylan Selchert, and David Peterson also reached the podium with a third-place finish.

The Watertown girls showcased their depth in the relay events, sweeping the top spots in two major races. The 4×100-meter relay team of Brooke Grajczyk, Ashlynn Andrews, Anna Hirtz, and Alayna Smith took first with a time of 50.30 seconds. Additionally, the 4×200-meter relay squad, consisting of Emma Reihe, Hirtz, Ruby Bruns, and Smith, claimed gold with a time of 1:46.50.

In individual competition, Elly Dingsor cleared 12 feet to win the pole vault, while teammate Hensley Hogue finished third in the same event. Grace McElroy led the distance runners with two second-place finishes, clocking 5:25.88 in the 1,600-meter and 11:31.58 in the 3,200-meter. Other notable performances included Shauna Evenson, who took second in the triple jump, and Mayla McGhee, who finished second in the high jump.

The Arrows are scheduled to travel to Clear Lake on Tuesday, April 14, to compete in the Pork Chop Relays.
