Area Athletes Record Top Finishes During Opening Day of Howard Wood Relays

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Regional track and field stars converged at the Howard Wood Relays this weekend, where Watertown athletes led a strong showing of local talent against premier competition.

Charlie Whiting highlighted the Watertown performance by securing a third-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 14 feet, 3 inches. Asher Young also competed in the event, clearing 12-03. On the track, Dane Stark placed 15th in a competitive 3200-meter run with a time of 9:28.01, while Grace McElroy took 14th in the girls’ 3200-meter event at 11:15.39. In the sprint events, Alayna Smith narrowly missed the finals in the 100-meter dash, placing ninth in the semifinals with a time of 12.39 seconds, followed closely by Anna Hirtz at 12.59 seconds.

The Watertown jump squad saw Merrick Engels tie for 13th in the high jump at 6-02, with Kye Paulson and Mason Iverson both clearing the 6-00 mark. Mayla McGhee added a 5-00 clearance in the girls’ high jump. In the hurdles, Tayson Suman clocked a 16.49 in the 110-meter prelims, and Brook Grajczyk finished the 100-meter hurdle prelims in 16.17 seconds. The distance medley relay team of Grace List, Olivia Anderson, Jayda Jensen, and Kate McElroy posted a time of 13:58.55. In the field, Jonas Geier threw the javelin 144-02, while Hunter Peterson marked 45-02.50 in the shot put. Malia Kranz competed in both the shot put and javelin, recording marks of 34-06.75 and 102-06, respectively, while Jordan Remmers threw 103-05 in the javelin.

Area Results
Deuel’s Oliver Fieber turned in a standout performance in a special 200-meter race, sprinting to a fourth-place finish with a time of 22.00 seconds.

Clark/Willow Lake found success in the throwing rings and on the track. Michael Severson powered through the shot put with a toss of 50-09.25, while Eliza Larson earned seventh place in the girls’ shot put with a distance of 38-06.25. Zoe Nichols represented the Cyclones in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 16.16 seconds.

Waverly-South Shore was also represented in the field events, where Marty Mickelson recorded a mark of 130-05 in the javelin.
