Watertown softball rallies late but falls in twin bill to Brookings, Washington

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Watertown softball team dropped a pair of contests Friday, falling 17-14 to Brookings and 13-1 to Sioux Falls Washington.

Brookings 17, Watertown 14
The Arrows nearly pulled off a massive comeback after trailing 11-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. Watertown surged back with a seven-run frame to cut the deficit to two. Despite a back-and-forth sixth inning that left Brookings clinging to a 13-12 lead, the Bobcats secured the win with a four-run seventh.

Brookings tallied 14 hits, led by Isla Eidsness, who finished 3-for-6 with an RBI. Ramsie Hinricher went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Tenley Sneer, Kendal Linstad, and Kinzey Grendler each added two hits. Taya Twedt earned the win, allowing four runs on two hits in her start.

Watertown’s 12-hit effort was paced by Alexa Brown and Lydia Stemwedel, who both went 3-for-4. Kodi Lund contributed three RBIs, and Maddie Carter added two hits. Lauryn Hirsch struck out seven over six innings in the circle.

“I was really proud of the girls today for their effort,” Watertown coach Kelli Brinka said. “We came out a little slow, but eventually settled in and made a big late-game comeback.”

Sioux Falls Washington 13, Watertown 1
The Warriors used an eight-run second inning to take early control, adding five more runs over the next two frames to end the game in five innings.

Kjerstin Kyte and Aubrey Chavez each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Washington, while Natalie Thompson also collected two hits. Emily Akkerman dominated in the circle, striking out 12 and allowing only one hit.

Lauryn Hirsch recorded the lone hit for Watertown. Alexa Brown pitched four innings, allowing 13 runs on eight hits.

“Washington is a very strong team, but we minimized our errors and were able to put some balls in play,” Brinka said. “We still have things to work on, but it was encouraging to see them play aggressively and compete the entire time.”
