Bertsch Claims Fifth to Lead Watertown at State Tennis Tournament

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Matthew Bertsch secured a fifth-place finish in flight three singles to lead Watertown to a ninth-place team finish at the Boys Class AA State Tennis Tournament.

The Arrows amassed 134 team points during the tournament. Sioux Falls Bishop O’Gorman captured the state team championship with 484 points, narrowly edging runner-up Harrisburg by just two points.

Bertsch provided the top highlight for Watertown in Flight 3 singles, defeating Yankton’s Chris Rockne 10-6 to claim fifth place.

In Flight 5 singles, Tyson Lawrence advanced to the fifth-place finals match before falling in a tight 10-9 decision to Max Vincelli of Brandon Valley.

Several other Arrows reached the fifth-place semifinals in singles action. In Flight 2, Xane Fligge fell 8-3 to Sioux Falls Washington’s Eli Boyd. Flight 4 saw Dawson Hartman fall 8-6 to Ethan Marsh of Yankton, while Flight 6’s Boston Butler dropped an 8-6 decision to Howard Rost of Harrisburg.

In Flight 1 singles, Joey Meester fell 10-8 to Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Carter Kemmis in the consolation quarterfinals.

In doubles play, the Flight 1 duo of Fligge and Hartman reached the consolation finals, where they fell 10-3 to the Jefferson team of Carter Kemmis and Charlie Erickson.

Two Watertown doubles teams reached the fifth-place semifinals. In Flight 2, Bertsch and Meester fell 10-5 to Mitchell’s Dawson Adams and Asher Dannenbring. In Flight 3, Butler and Lawrence dropped a 10-6 match to Shane Callahan and erris Pendegraft of Rapid City Stevens.
