Area Athletes Bring Home Titles and Records From Howard Wood Field

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Area athletes put together standout performances this past week at the 2026 SDHSAA State Track and Field Meet at Howard Wood Field, highlighted by an individual state championship and a meet record.

In Class A, the Deuel boys team captured seventh place overall with 38 points, fueled by a dominant performance from Oliver Fieber. Fieber set a meet record in the 100-meter preliminaries with a time of 10.60 seconds before winning the state title in the finals at 10.67 seconds. He also claimed the state championship in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.10 seconds.

Deuel also found major success in the relays, winning the 4×200-meter relay in 1 minute, 29.81 seconds and placing second in the 4×100-meter relay at 43.30 seconds. The 4×800-meter relay team added an 11th-place finish (8:34.73).

The Clark/Willow Lake girls team secured a 10th-place finish in Class A with 25 points, led by Eliza Larson, who won the state title in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 3.75 inches. Calla Larson joined her on the podium with a seventh-place finish in the event (32-10.25).

The Cyclones also saw top-10 finishes from Cadence Bochek, who took fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.39), and Kamryn Nesheim, who placed seventh in the 3,200-meter run (11:30.61) and eighth in the 1,600-meter run (5:17.82). The 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team placed fourth in 4:11.50, while Shelby Begeman took 12th in the high jump (5-00) and Johanna Vanersnick placed 15th in the long jump (15-06.25). The 4×400-meter relay finished in 4:11.20.

The Clark/Willow Lake boys were led by Bo Begeman, who placed seventh in the triple jump (42-00.50) and 14th in the high jump (6-00). Michael Severson took eighth in the shot put (50-01.75), and Jakob Steen placed 11th in the javelin throw (147-04).

In Class B, Brody Bass paced the Castlewood boys by earning a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.06 seconds. Bass also took seventh in the javelin (144-00). The Warriors also got an eighth-place finish from Will Aderhold in the high jump (5-10.00) and a 14th-place finish from Nolan Eidson in the 3,200-meter run (10:22.51).

The Deuel girls excelled in the pole vault, placing three athletes in the top 10. Hannah Cutshaw took third (11-01.00), Lauryn Peterreins placed fifth (10-07.00), and Rylie Bass finished 10th (9-07.00). Camdyn Peterreins added a 15th-place finish in the shot put (33-04.50).

Estelline/Hendricks received podium performances from Emma Gilbertson, who took eighth in the girls javelin (114-05), and Maggie Hausman, who placed eighth in the girls pole vault (9-01.00). For the boys, Cooper Schaefer earned a pair of 12th-place finishes in the 1,600-meter run (4:47.06) and the 3,200-meter run (10:09.29). The boys 1,600-meter sprint medley relay finished 15th (3:50.67).

Florence/Henry’s Dawson Hlavacek placed eighth in the Class A triple jump (41-10.00) and 15th in the long jump (19-08.75).

Waubay/Summit’s Teegan Gaikowski earned an eighth-place finish in the Class B high jump (5-10.00) and finished 14th in the triple jump (28-01.50).

Hamlin’s Addelyn Jensen placed 12th in the Class A high jump (5-00.00), and Waverly-South Shore’s Jaina Johnson took 10th in the Class B triple jump (32-09.25) and 15th in the javelin (111-02).
