Florence/Henry Falls to Gayville-Volin in State Tournament Opener

ABERDEEN, S.D. — A late-game rally wasn’t enough for Florence/Henry as the Falcons dropped a 3-1 decision to Gayville-Volin on Thursday in the opening round of the SDHSAA State Softball Tournament.

Gayville-Volin’s offense proved potent early, racking up 11 hits throughout the contest. Paisley Dimmer fronted the Pirates’ attack with three hits and an RBI, while Kendra Beeck and Aliza Westrum each driven in a run on two hits.

Florence/Henry ace Jolie Westrum delivered a gritty performance in the circle, pitching a complete game. Westrum struck out six batters and managed to limit the damage to three runs despite navigating the 11 hits allowed.

The Falcons struggled to find their rhythm at the plate for most of the afternoon, stymied by Gayville-Volin’s defense. Taylor Vavruska led Florence/Henry with a 2-for-3 performance, while Aubrey Schmidt collected the team’s only other hit.

Florence/Henry finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, Emma Caulfield reached base on a Pirate error, allowing Vavruska to cross the plate and erase the shutout. However, the Pirates quickly recorded the final out to secure the 3-1 victory.

With the loss, Florence/Henry moves into the consolation bracket. The Falcons are scheduled to face Redfield in the consolation semifinals on Friday at noon.
