ABERDEEN, S.D. — A six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning fell just short as Florence/Henry dropped a 7-6 decision to Redfield on Friday in the consolation semifinals of the SDHSAA Class B Softball Tournament.
Elizabeth Reiter ignited the late surge for the Falcons with an RBI single. Moments later, a Redfield error allowed two more runs to cross the plate, cutting into the deficit. Kaylee Vavruska followed with an RBI double, and Reiter later scored on a wild pitch to bring Florence/Henry within two at 7-5.
After Taylor Vavruska grounded out for the first out of the inning, Aubrey Schmidt drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-6. However, Redfield secured the victory when Emma Caulfield grounded out to end the game.
Kaylee Vavruska led the Falcons offensively, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Reiter went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and pitched a complete game, allowing seven runs on six hits while striking out seven.
Kinley Smith paced Redfield, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kylie Hermann and Adriana Bagola each added two hits and two RBIs apiece. Octavia Paulsen started on the rubber for Redfield, allowing six runs on five hits over six innings, while MaKayla Schulz earned the win in relief.
Florence/Henry will face Avon in the seventh-place game at 10 a.m. Saturday. The matchup will be streamed live on SDPB.org/Softball and the SDPB YouTube channel.
