MILBANK, S.D. — Dom Boerger delivered a masterful 21-strikeout performance to lead the Milbank Firechiefs to a 6-2 victory over the Castlewood Ravens in South Dakota amateur baseball action Sunday.
Boerger earned the complete-game win, scattering nine hits and allowing two runs over nine dominant innings.
Castlewood struck early when Nate Phinney hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Ravens a brief 2-1 lead. Milbank had previously tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Brady Krause.
The Firechiefs answered in the bottom of the sixth when Tyler Krause drove in a run with an RBI single to tie the game. Milbank took control for good in the seventh inning when Merik Junker cracked a two-RBI double, putting the Firechiefs ahead 4-2.
Milbank capitalized on a Castlewood defensive error in the bottom of the eighth to tack on two insurance runs.
Junker, Boerger, Joe Schulte, and Tyler Krause paced Milbank’s offense with two hits apiece, while Junker drove in two runs.
Kellan Benck suffered the loss for the Ravens. Benck surrendered four runs on seven hits, striking out eight and walking three over his outing.
Alex Gauer led Castlewood at the plate, finishing 3-for-4. Lucas Ching, Phinney, and Gus Steiger each contributed two hits in the loss.
Castlewood (8-3) looks to bounce back Wednesday when it travels to face the Elkton Snappers. Milbank (6-5) will look to extend its momentum Wednesday on the road against the Ramona Express.
