Before the high school sports season fires up in a few weeks and things get crazy, I thought I’d take a moment to introduce myself and welcome you to WTN Sports.
I’m Brent Nathaniel. I’ve lived in Watertown for over a decade, and I think it’s important for you to know who is behind the media you’re consuming.
I’ve worked in the media field for over 25 years, spending most of that time following the local sports scene for radio stations across Northeast South Dakota. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to win several awards for my sports play-by-play and reporting. Some of you might know me best from my time covering local sports on one of the radio groups right here in Watertown. You can hear some of my work HERE.
Throughout my career, I’ve always strived to do one thing: put local first.
You can get scores for the Vikings, the Twins, or your favorite national team anywhere. But local sports coverage for local teams? That’s what I’ve always prioritized. It was getting harder to find—and even harder to find for free.
I stepped away from full-time radio in 2022. During my time off, I noticed the local sports media landscape shrink even further. It bothered me that free coverage of our local student-athletes was fading, and I kept hoping someone would pick up the mantle. I knew I wanted it, and it seemed like the community did, too.
Eventually, I got tired of waiting and asked myself: Why don’t I pick up the mantle? Could I do it? Between my other jobs, could I carve out enough time in my schedule to give local sports the platform they deserve?
In the fall of 2025, I put a question out on Facebook: “If there was a free place to read about local teams, would you read and support it?”
The answer was an overwhelming YES!
That single question blossomed into an idea. I purchased a domain, set up social media accounts, and WTNSports.com was officially launched in November 2025.
We’ve been taking things step-by-step—mainly because my schedule is pretty full! By day, I work full-time for SDPB handling digital and social media. In the summers, I’m the Media Specialist for the Watertown Baseball Association. On weeknights from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., you can still catch me on the air at Power 106.3.
Because I’m fitting this in around everything else (I do have to sleep eventually!), I’ve narrowed my focus. My goal is to cover the Watertown Arrows and the high schools within a 20-to-30-minute radius of Watertown.

A few local businesses have already reached out about sponsorships, but I’m not taking any just yet. Between needing a business license and being a natural introvert—sales just isn’t my strength!—I want to take things one step at a time. Down the road, the goal is to bring on a few sponsors to help cover basic operating and domain costs.
