HURON, S.D. — The Watertown high school volleyball team went 2-2 to split its competition Saturday at the Huron Invitational.
Watertown, which received votes in the Class AA preseason poll, swept a pair of opponents while dropping two hard-fought three-set matches to top-ranked Class B programs.
Watertown opened the day with a dominant 25-10, 25-9 sweep over Douglas. Hensley Hogue sparked the service game, going 16-for-18 with five aces, while Reese Munger (7-for-7) and Carighan Klatt (8-for-8) each added two aces. Klatt powered the offense with seven kills, followed by Kali Ellis with five and Torrence Tipton with four. Jaelyn Kettwig dished out 20 assists, Klatt logged six digs, and Munger posted two block assists.
In its second match, Watertown fell to Northwestern, the third-ranked team in Class B, in three sets: 26-24, 24-26, 25-19. Kettwig directed the offense with 34 assists while going 13-for-13 at the service line with an ace. Hogue served 13-for-14 with an ace. Defensively, Andi Olson picked up 10 digs, Maryn York recorded eight, and Hogue and Klatt chipped in five apiece. Munger and Klatt registered one block each.
Watertown rebounded in match three, sweeping Sturgis 25-21, 25-20. Klatt led the attack with seven kills, while Munger added five and Cambrie Klatt chipped in four. Kettwig recorded 20 assists and six digs, while Olson led the defense with seven digs. Hogue went 9-for-9 serving with two aces, and Tipton finished with two block assists.
In the final match of the day, Watertown fell in three sets to Chester, the top-ranked team in Class B and defending 2025 state champion, 28-26, 25-23, 25-21. Carighan Klatt and Tipton led the net attack with 13 kills each, fed by Kettwig’s match-high 39 assists. Hogue collected 13 digs and went 16-for-16 serving with an ace. Olson contributed 10 digs, Maryn York went 13-for-14 serving with an ace, and Tipton anchored the net defense with one solo block and one block assist.
Watertown (4-2) returns home Tuesday to host Marshall, Minnesota.
