Watertown Edges Pierre in Opener, Falls to Brandon Valley in Sunday Slate

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Watertown Arrow softball team split a pair of games Sunday, defeating Pierre 4-1 before falling to Brandon Valley 13-3.

A third-inning surge propelled Watertown (1-1) over Pierre in the opening contest. Leah Struckman sparked the scoring with an RBI triple, followed by a two-run single from Macy Ingraham and a Pierre error to build a 4-0 lead. Pierre answered with its lone run in the sixth inning following a Watertown error.

Struckman and Maddie Carter paced the Arrows at the plate with two hits apiece, while Ingraham finished with one hit and two RBIs.

Emmy Berglund earned the victory on the rubber, allowing one run on one hit while striking out seven and walking five across six innings. Katie Pederson collected Pierre’s only hit. Brynlee Karber took the loss, surrendering four runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

In the second game, Brandon Valley capitalized on a six-run third inning and five Watertown errors to secure a 13-3 victory.

Kathryn Mathison and Macie Letsche recorded two hits each to lead Brandon Valley. Vanessa Kiggins earned the win, giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Logan Schell, Berglund, Ingraham, Carter, Grace DeVries, and Emma Caufield each singled for Watertown. Ingraham took the loss, allowing 12 runs — five earned — on eight hits over the outing, striking out three and walking three.

Junior Varsity Results

• Adrian-Ellsworth 8, Watertown JV1 2: DeVries, Sam Fuller, and Schell recorded hits for Watertown. Jordan Evenson took the loss, giving up seven runs (five earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
• Watertown JV1 5, Yankton 1: Chesney Berglund struck out 13 batters, allowing one run on three hits to earn the win. Struckman, DeVries, Ellie Hirsch, Nora Pownell, Lauren Lester, and Fuller each chipped in a hit.
• Baltic 14, Watertown JV2 3: Sophie Pickrel and Harper Hlavacek each singled, with Hlavacek driving in two runs. Pickrel surrendered 14 runs (five earned) on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings.
• Watertown JV2 6, Alcester-Hudson 3: Alanya Caufield drove in two runs, and Pickrel added two hits. Chesney Berglund started on the mound, giving up one run with two strikeouts in her outing, while Pickrel and Evenson combined in relief to yield two runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
