BROOKINGS, S.D. — Third-ranked Watertown racked up 324 yards of total offense and held rival Brookings scoreless for most of the night en route to a 35-7 victory Friday at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
Watertown opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Kaeden Himmerich connected with Braden Jenc for a 29-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 with 2:25 remaining.
The Arrows extended their lead with 30 seconds left before halftime when Kutler Swenson returned an interception for a touchdown, giving Watertown a 14-0 advantage at the break.
Watertown broke the game open early in the second half. Lincoln Schutt broke free for a 90-yard touchdown run at the 11:07 mark of the third quarter. Just 29 seconds later, Caden Corey returned the Arrows’ second interception of the night for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 28-0.
Charles Whiting added a 10-yard touchdown run with 7:56 left in the fourth quarter to put Watertown up 35-0. Brookings scored its only touchdown with 50 seconds remaining in the game.
Himmerich finished 10-of-17 passing for 121 yards and two touchdowns while adding 26 yards on the ground. Schutt led the ground attack with 147 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
Jenc caught two passes for 38 yards and a touchdown, while Swenson had three receptions for 33 yards and a score.
The Watertown defense tallied three interceptions on the night, returning two for touchdowns. Maxx Sears led the defensive effort with eight tackles. Corey, Tyson Miller and Charles Whiting contributed seven tackles each.
Watertown returns home Friday to host No. 2 Tea Area.
