RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Watertown cross country team got a preview of the upcoming state meet course, competing at the Rapid City Invitational at Hart Ranch.
Spearfish’s Peyton VanDeest captured the top spot in the girls race with a time of 17 minutes, 41.20 seconds, while Eric Errea posted the overall winning boys time at 15:26.40.
Dane Stark led the Watertown boys with a standout performance, finishing second overall with a time of 15:38.10. Stark was the lone Watertown boys runner to land in the top 30. Finishing further back for the Arrows were Channing DeBoer (18:01.10), Logan Becker (18:15.70), Kaiser Lunde (19:03.70), and Evan Mack (19:13.60).
On the girls side, Grace McElroy paced Watertown with a fourth-place finish, crossing the line in 18:40.0. Kate McElroy, earned a top-10 finish by placing 10th in 19:41.30, followed closely by teammate Lily Gerlach in 14th place at 19:50.60. Rounding out the girls lineup outside the top 30 were Jayda Jensen (21:49.30), Grace List (22:07.30), Addison Reichling (22:30.20), and Genesis Anderson (22:33.50).
Watertown returns home for its next competition, hosting the Watoma Invite on Oct. 1.
