WATERTOWN, S.D. — Roger Carranza scored twice in overtime to lift top-seeded Watertown to a 4-2 victory over Spearfish on Saturday night, punching the Arrows’ ticket to the Class AA boys soccer semifinals.
Watertown opened the scoring late in the first half when Zane Fligge found the back of the net with 36:43 remaining. Spearfish answered before the break, sending the match into halftime tied at 1-1.
The drama escalated in the closing minutes of regulation. Isaac Thorson gave the Arrows a 2-1 lead with just 3:52 left on the clock. However, Spearfish converted a penalty kick with 56 seconds remaining in regulation to force extra time.
Carranza took over in the extra period. He gave Watertown a 3-2 lead with a header at the 8:52 mark of overtime, then sealed the victory by tapping in his second goal with 4:05 left.
Thorson finished the night with a goal and two assists. Carson Schlaht and Kasen Bender each added an assist for the Arrows, while goalkeeper Owen Muller made five saves.
With the win, undefeated Watertown (15-0-1) advances to host Sioux Falls Jefferson in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Allen Mitchell Field.
