WATERTOWN, S.D. — Tyson Miller scored two rushing touchdowns as four different Arrow players found the end zone to propel Watertown past Spearfish 35-13 in a Class 11AA quarterfinals Thursday.
Unlike the season-opening matchup on Aug. 28—where Watertown narrowly escaped Allen Mitchell Field with a 26-20 win—the Arrows held firm control from the opening kickoff.
Miller put Watertown on the board first, rushing into the end zone with 6:31 left in the first quarter to build a 7-0 lead. Hunter Peterson extended the advantage to 14-0 at the 8:55 mark of the second quarter.
Spearfish answered back quickly as Graham Hughes rumbled in for a score, trimming the margin to 14-7. However, Watertown responded just before halftime when Kye Paulson scored on an end-around with 36 seconds remaining, taking a 21-7 lead into the break.
Watertown kept up the momentum in the second half. Miller punched in his second touchdown of the game at 5:52 in the third quarter, and Holton Schutt added a rushing touchdown at 7:25 of the fourth quarter to push the game further out of reach.
Spearfish added a late touchdown with 4:40 remaining in the fourth quarter when Thomas Hughes connected with Karsen Seyer, but the deficit proved too large to bridge.
With the win, Watertown (7-3) advances to the semifinals on Nov. 6, where they will travel to face Yankton—a Bucks squad the Arrows defeated 42-14 back on Sept. 25.
