HURON, S.D. — The Watertown High School cheer and dance teams both earned third-place overall finishes Tuesday at the Huron Invitational.
The Watertown cheer team secured third place with a score of 237.5. Brookings took the top spot in the competition, finishing with a score of 275.5.
“The team had a solid performance considering we were without one of our athletes due to injury and were unable to perform our full pyramid,” Watertown cheer coach Malory Hoffman said. “Our tumbling had a strong showing and all of our stunts stayed in the air. We are seeing continued progress and will use this performance to build confidence moving forward.”
In the dance competition, Watertown tied with Aberdeen Central for third place, with both teams earning 36 points. Harrisburg claimed the grand championship title with 40 points.
Watertown placed fourth in the pom division with a score of 236.5 and took second place in jazz with a score of 237.
“The girls performed great in jazz,” Watertown dance coach Carolyn Fraher said. “The pom routine had a timing issue, but overall was really strong. We were disappointed with a six-point safety deduction in the pom for a skill we have done all last season and the first three competitions this season. We would have placed higher without the deduction. We were still excited to sneak into the third spot overall.”
Both the Watertown cheer and dance squads will compete next on Sept. 19 at the Dacotah Bank Center in Brookings.
