Pierre uses six-run fourth to upend Watertown in season opener

PIERRE, S.D. — A six-run fourth inning proved too much Tuesday as Watertown fell to Pierre 7-3 in high school softball action.

Pierre held a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Watertown rallied for two runs in the third to take a brief 2-1 lead. The Governors answered in the bottom of the fourth, exploding for six runs to reclaim the lead for good.

Watertown recorded three hits in the contest from Alexa Brown, Lauryn Hirsch, and Lydia Stemwedel. Brown and Hirsch each credited an RBI.

In the circle, Brown pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits while striking out seven. Hirsch provided 2 2/3 innings of scoreless work, surrendering two hits and striking out five.

“I thought we did a lot of really great things; we made some plays, were aggressive when we got on the bases, and it was great to just get a game under our belt,” Watertown coach Kelli Brinka said. “We have some things to work out and continue to improve on, but we’re looking forward to our next opportunity.”

Micah Buffalo led the Pierre offense with two hits and an RBI. Five other Governors recorded hits: Ally Keyes, McKenzi Flottmeyer, Ava Nelson, Alivia Heymans, and Taryn Spruill.

Flottmeyer earned the win with a complete-game performance. She allowed three runs on three hits and struck out 12 over seven innings.

Watertown (0-1) hosts Aberdeen Central at the Premier Softball Complex on April 16.
