SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Local track and field athletes capped off a busy weekend of competition as the Dakota Relays concluded Saturday at the Howard Wood Athletic Complex.
Watertown’s Charlie Whiting provided a major highlight for the Arrows, securing a third-place finish in the pole vault by clearing 14 feet, 3 inches. Asher Young also competed in the event, clearing 12-03. On the girls’ side, Malia Kranz delivered a standout performance in the throwing rings, taking third place in the discus with a toss of 139-07. Kranz also placed in the shot put and javelin. Elly Dingsor earned a seventh-place medal in the girls’ pole vault at 11-03, while Katie Flemming cleared 9-09.
On the track, Dane Stark led the Watertown distance crew with a seventh-place finish in the 1,600-meter run, crossing the line in 4:16.79. Stark also placed 15th in the 3,200-meter run. The girls’ 4×100-meter relay team of Carighan Klott, Anna Hirtz, Ashlynn Andrews, and Alayna Smith earned sixth place with a time of 49.66 seconds. In the field, Shauna Evenson took eighth in the triple jump at 35-07.50, and Merrick Engels placed 13th in the high jump at 6-02.
Area schools also found success throughout the weekend. For Clark/Willow Lake, the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team of Madison Brenden, Johanna Vandersnick, Cadence Bochek, and Kamryn Nesheim took fifth place in 4:17.23. Eliza Larson earned a seventh-place medal in the shot put with a throw of 38-06.25, and Michael Severson finished 12th in the boys’ shot put at 50-09.25.
Hamlin saw strong performances. Isaac Sheehan took second in the Special Olympic 100-meter dash in 14.83 seconds. Sheehan later joined Watson Grantham, Wesley Grantham, and Jaden Olson to place third in the 4×100-meter Unified relay. Castlewood’s boys’ 4×200-meter relay team, consisting of Brody Bass, Dalton Moorhouse, Will Aderhold, and Kamden Keszler, earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:34.24.
Deuel’s vertical jumpers excelled, as Hannah Cutshaw and Lauryn Peterreins both cleared 10-03 in the pole vault. On the track, the Deuel 4×800-meter relay team finished in 8:37.48. Great Plains Lutheran was led by Milo Schumacher, who clocked a 16.19 in the 110-meter hurdles and a 43.00 in the 300-meter hurdles. Florence/Henry’s Addison Byer ran the 400-meter dash in 1:03.10, while Dawson Hlavacek reached 38-11.75 in the triple jump to round out the area’s top performances.
