Watertown Edges Mitchell 11-9 Behind All-Around Effort

WATERTOWN, S.D. — A collective offensive effort and a dominant relief performance in the circle lifted the Watertown Arrows to an 11-9 victory over Mitchell in high school softball action Monday night.

The Arrows (2-6) combined for 10 hits, with four players recording multi-hit games. Kodi Lund, Emmy Berglund, Maddie Carter, and Leah Struckman each tallied two hits and one RBI to lead the charge. Kenly Martenson added a hit and two RBIs, while Logan Schell chipped in with a hit and a run scored.

Watertown head coach Kelli Brinka credited the team’s execution under pressure for the win.

“Tonight was a great all-around game for us and a big win,” Brinka said. “We had a lot of girls come through with timely hits, and it was especially impressive to see us put together big two-out rallies to bring in runs.”

After starter Alexa Brown allowed six runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings, Lauryn Hirsch took over in relief to shut down the Mitchell offense. Hirsch tossed 4 2/3 innings, surrendering only three runs on three hits while striking out eight batters.

“Lauryn came in the third inning and did a great job in the circle, giving us a lot of momentum,” Brinka said. “The girls stayed locked in and brought great energy throughout the game.”

Mitchell’s offense was paced by Kinsley Herges and Brooklyn Schlimgen, who each finished with two hits and two RBIs. Malia Reitzel also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Oaklyn Soulek pitched a complete six innings for Mitchell, allowing 11 runs on 10 hits and striking out four.

Watertown looks to carry the momentum on the road as they travel to Yankton on Tuesday.
