ESTELLINE, S.D. — Area track and field athletes gathered at the Dwight Kenney Meet in Estelline with Deuel leading the way through a series of dominant performances in both individual and relay events.
The Deuel boys found significant success on the track, highlighted by a middle-distance sweep. Caden Hourigan secured first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.92, while teammate Tyson Hagberg claimed the 1,600-meter title after crossing the finish line in 4:45.93. Gavin Kloos contributed a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.37.
In the relay events, the Deuel boys took the top spot in two major races. The 4×100-meter relay team of Axel Gallardo, Brock Johnson, Kloos, and Chris Gallardo posted a winning time of 45.73. Later, Cody Tvedt, Malakai Maskovich, Sutton Benck, and Levi Peterson took first in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:05.48. In field events, Owen Haas won the javelin with a toss of 151 feet, 5 inches, and Gavin Mattson took second in the pole vault at 10 feet, 4 inches.
The Deuel girls were equally effective, led by Alayna Carlson who won the 100-meter dash in 13.38. Paycee Lee earned a victory in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:06.96, and Brooklyn Tanner took the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.44. Hannah Cutshaw rounded out the individual wins for Deuel by clearing 9 feet, 4 inches to win the pole vault.
Deuel also swept the short-sprint relays on the girls’ side. Laycee Andersen, Carlson, Tanner, and Sophie Trupe won the 4×100-meter relay in 55.14. The same core, with Lauryn Peterreins replacing Tanner, secured the 4×200-meter relay title in 1:55.55. Other notable Deuel finishes included second-place efforts from Amelia Giese in the 800-meter, Shyla Tvedt in the 1,600-meter, and Camdyn Pettereins in the discus.
The host team, Estelline/Hendricks, saw a standout day from Regan Schwartz and Kade Hauck. Schwartz won the 200-meter dash in 24.10 and took second in the 400-meter. Hauck secured first place in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 7 inches, and added a second-place finish in the triple jump. Cooper Schaefer earned two runner-up finishes in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter races.
For the Estelline/Hendricks girls, Emma Gilbertson won the javelin title with a throw of 107 feet, 4 inches, and Marie Persch claimed the long jump with a mark of 14 feet, 9.5 inches. Riah Hartung and Kori Saathoff each added second-place finishes in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes, respectively.
Castlewood’s Brody Bass had a busy afternoon, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 15.46 and taking second in the javelin. He also joined Dalton Moorhouse, Will Aderhold, and Kamden Keszler to win the 4×200-meter relay in 1:37.97. Xander Haagensen added a win in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.66, while the team of Moorhouse, Yader Munox, Aderhold, and Nolan Eidson took first in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay.
Waverly-South Shore was highlighted by Jaina Johnson, who won the girls’ triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 1 inch. Austin Hovitek added a second-place finish for the Coyotes in the 200-meter dash.
