Schell’s Home Run Powers Arrows Past Sturgis

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Logan Schell homered during a three-run sixth inning to lift the Watertown Arrows to a 4-3 victory over Sturgis, highlighting a 1-2 weekend performance that included losses to Spearfish and Rapid City Stevens.

“I was really proud of some of the at-bats we had this weekend,” Watertown coach Kelli Brinka said. “We had a lot of girls come through with big hits in big situations and showed what we’re capable of offensively.”

Watertown 4, Sturgis 3
Schell finished 2-for-3 to lead the Arrows’ comeback against the Scoopers. Leah Struckman added a hit and two RBIs, while Kodi Lund, Emmy Berglund, Alexa Brown, and Kenly Martenson each contributed hits.

Brown earned the win, pitching a complete game. She allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven.

“Alexa Brown did an amazing job for us against Sturgis,” Brinka said. “Not every pitch was working for her, but she competed really well, stayed effective, and did a great job keeping the Scoopers off balance.”

Tylee Bestgen led Sturgis with an RBI, while Brinley Heikes took the loss, allowing three runs over five innings.

Spearfish 9, Watertown 2
Five errors proved costly for Watertown in a Friday loss to Spearfish. Vanorah Carlson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Spartans, while pitcher Taylor Tennant held the Arrows to two runs on six hits in a complete-game effort.

Six different Arrows recorded hits in the loss. Lauryn Hirsch started in the circle, striking out eight and allowing five runs over 3 2/3 innings. Brown provided relief, allowing four runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Rapid City Stevens 14, Watertown 1
The Raiders broke the game open with a six-run third inning on Saturday. Norah Tideman fueled the Stevens offense, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Audrinna Colhoff dominated on the rubber, striking out eight and allowing only three hits over five innings.

Brown, Maddie Carter, and Martenson accounted for Watertown’s only hits. Hirsch took the loss, surrendering 12 runs on seven hits through three innings of work.

Up Next
The Arrows (3-8) enter the final two weeks of the regular season looking for rhythm.

“When we find consistency with our energy and focus to stay in games from start to finish, we can compete with just about anyone,” Brinka said.

Watertown hosts Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Tuesday to begin a six-game closing stretch.

“Every inning and every opportunity matters for us right now,” Brinka said. “It’s a chance for us to continue growing, clean some things up, and prove what we’re capable of.”
