ABERDEEN, S.D. — The Watertown track and field teams delivered a series of dominant performances Friday at the Al Sahli Invitational, hosted by Aberdeen Central High School. The Arrows secured multiple top finishes across both track and field events, highlighted by several individual titles and relay victories.
The girls’ team saw a standout day from Alayna Smith, who captured the 200-meter dash title with a time of 25.60 seconds and took second in the 100-meter dash at 12.38 seconds. Smith also anchored two winning relay teams. The 4×100-meter relay team, featuring Carighan Klatt, Anna Hirtz, and Ashlynn Andrews, took first place in 49.78 seconds. The 4×200-meter relay unit of Klatt, Hirtz, and Brooke Grajczyk also claimed gold with a time of 1:46.19. Hirtz added to the team score by placing second in the 200-meter dash behind Smith.
In the field, Malia Kranz led the way for the Watertown girls with a first-place throw of 148 feet, 7 inches in the discus and a second-place finish in the shot put. High jumper Mayla McGhee cleared 5 feet, 3 inches to win her event, while Elly Dingsor took the top spot in the pole vault with a height of 11-3. Shauna Evenson contributed a second-place effort in the triple jump, and Kate McElroy earned a runner-up finish in the 3,200-meter run.
On the boys’ side, the Arrows found significant success in the vertical jumps. Charlie Whiting cleared 13-9 to win the pole vault, followed closely by teammate Asher Young, who took second at 13-3. Mason Iverson also earned a second-place finish in the high jump by clearing 5-11.
Dane Stark clocked a 1:58.42 to finish second in the 800-meter run, and Gage Robinson secured second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.58 seconds. In the throws, Hunter Peterson represented Watertown on the podium with a second-place toss of 47-10.25 in the shot put.
