MILBANK, S.D. — The Milbank boys and Clark/Willow Lake girls rose above the conditions Thursday to secure team titles at the Northeast Conference (NEC) track meet.
The Milbank boys capitalized on their home-track advantage, racking up 161.5 points to outpace runner-up Deuel (110). On the girls’ side, Clark/Willow Lake dominated the field with a massive 198-point performance, finishing well ahead of the competition.
Boys Division
Deuel’s Oliver Fieber provided the individual highlights of the afternoon. Fieber blazed through the wind to win the 100-meter dash in 10.55 seconds. He was followed by teammate Gavin Kloos (11.19), who also took second in the 200-meter dash (23.00).
Deuel also showcased its speed in the relays, capturing the 4×100-meter title in 42.83 seconds. In the distance events, Tyson Hagberg earned a pair of silver medals for Deuel, finishing second in both the 1,600-meter (4:44.43) and 3,200-meter (10:20.84) runs.
Hamlin, which finished seventh overall with 58 points, found success in the longer sprints and relays. Trig Heinrich took second in the 400-meter dash (53.66), while the Chargers swept the 4×200 (1:34.92) and 4×400 (3:32.36) relays. Clark/Willow Lake placed sixth in the boys’ standings, led by a second-place finish in the 4×200 relay.
Girls Division
Nevaeh Reitz led the charge for Clark/Willow Lake, winning the 200-meter dash (27.17) and taking second in the 100-meter (12.98). Cadence Bochek and Kamryn Nesheim dominated the middle distances; Bochek won the 400-meter (59.43), while Nesheim took the 800-meter (2:22.03) and 1,600-meter (5:25.01) titles.
In the field, the Cyclones picked up a victory from Ella Sass in the javelin (105-11) and runner-up finishes from Bre Ahrens in the discus and Johanna Vandersnick in the long jump.
Deuel finished fourth in the team standings (73 points), anchored by Shyla Tvedt’s victory in the 3,200-meter run (13:07.92). The Cardinals also saw a tie in the pole vault, as teammates Hannah Cutshaw and Lauryn Peterreins both cleared 9-6 to share second place.
Hamlin rounded out the local scoring in 10th place, highlighted by Addelyn Jensen’s second-place leap of 4-11 in the high jump.
