Early surge carries Bobcats past Arrows

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Brookings offense capitalized on eight Watertown errors Tuesday night, defeating the Arrows 17-2 in a game shortened to three innings by the run rule.

The Bobcats established dominance early, plating four runs in the first inning before breaking the game open with a 13-run second. Brookings tallied 15 hits in the shortened contest, led by Kinzey Grendler, who finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Brynn Flemming added two hits and two RBIs, while Grace Romsa contributed two hits and an RBI to the Bobcats’ balanced attack. In the circle, Ella Psyk earned the win, striking out three and allowing two runs on just two hits over three innings.

Watertown (1-4) struggled to find its rhythm both in the field and at the plate. Leah Struckman provided the Arrows’ primary offensive spark with two RBI’s. Alexa Brown accounted for the team’s only other hit.

The Arrows utilized two pitchers in the effort. Brown allowed 12 runs on five hits in one inning of work, while Lauryn Hirsch surrendered five runs on five hits in her inning of work.

“This was a really tough loss,” Watertown coach Kelli Brinka said. “We didn’t meet our standard tonight. But this can be a defining moment for us — how we respond, the adjustments we are going to make and the mindset we bring moving forward will determine where we go from here.”

Watertown looks to rebound this weekend during tournament play at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls.
