Castlewood’s ninth-inning comeback falls short in loss to Elkton

ELKTON, S.D. — Down four runs heading into the ninth inning, the Castlewood Ravens mounted a late-game rally but fell just short, dropping a 10-9 decision to the Elkton Snappers on Wednesday night in South Dakota amateur baseball action.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Nate Phinney doubled on a line drive to center field to drive in three runs and bring the Ravens within one. However, Elkton pitcher Aiden Stewart induced a game-ending groundout from Blayne Schliesman to secure the victory for the Snappers.

Phinney paced the Castlewood offense, finishing the night 2-for-6 with six RBIs. Treyton Himmerich and Tucker Wookey each collected two hits in the loss.

Ravens starter Booker Schooley pitched six innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits while striking out three. Wookey was charged with the loss after surrendering five runs on five hits over two innings of relief.

Elkton’s 16-hit attack was led by Aiden Erickson, who went 4-for-5 at the plate. Owen Cass, Charlie Harming, and Logan Kuehl each drove in two runs for the Snappers.

Stewart earned the win, yielding four runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings. Elkton starter Dylan Kuehl went 6 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on five hits while striking out five and walking five.

Castlewood (8-4) returns to action Sunday when it hosts the Volga Cormorants.
